I don’t think there’s really any good way for any of this storyline to go…

I mean, you also have to consider in the books, Tyrion was already hideous *and* lost his nose in the Blackwater, and Sansa is ELEVEN years old…AND she willingly participated in humiliating him at their wedding (she refuses to kneel and be “cloaked”)…so yeah, show STILL less misogynist than books.

Honestly… in that world, she probably SHOULD be a little grateful that Tyrion is slightly less horrible than everyone around her, and she did not have to marry that little shit Joffrey. Seriously. Yes, he’s meeting the bare minimum of human decency, he is living in a world where many men do not, and do not see a damned thing wrong with it. Keep in mind, in the previous episode, Daeny basically gets told by a dude that if she wants his military help, she’s going to have to screw him. It’s a hideous world. And it’s a world where men treat women like things. But it’s not a world where the women are complicit, entirely. They take what power they can, and do what they can to survive. Which is sort of the story of human history. Women have always had this “other world.” Men used to call it the domain of women, and did not pay attention to their “prattle.” One of the things I love about Austen is that she looks at that world. Where even privileged women are backstabbing and doing their best to marry well, and get their children married well because that was SURVIVAL back then. Even for women in pretty dresses. Do I hate that women are treated the way they are in GoT? YES. However, I think it is a reflection on the history of women and HOW they took what power they could.

Yes, I know there’re other seriously problematic elements, such as the representation (or lack there of in some cases) of people of color, and how they’re largely represented as savages, etc. But I think this is one thing that GoT has painfully, terribly and sadly right.

I don’t doubt that Elia was attractive, but I think it’s problematic to assume the only reason she wasn’t perceived as such is because of her skin color. The average-looking everywoman character whom the audience is supposed to relate to is ALWAYS white. Elia is interesting because she’s remembered for her intellect and personality, and NOT her looks. Do you know how rare this is for women of color? WOC in the media are rare and when we see them, they are always exceptionally beautiful. ASOIAF has knock-out WOCs in Arianne and Nymeria. As much as I’d love to have more, I’m glad GRRM chose to describe Elia as he did. In her character we have an average-looking WOC who is still appreciated and important to the narrative. Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai are great but they’re not Elia.

I think you’re misinterpreting what we mean when we say that her beauty isn’t acknowledged because she’s a woman of colour.

Elia is described as pretty in the books by certain characters, like Howland Reed for example, who had no particular social biases against the Dornish. In other instances, Barristan for example, compares her features to Ashara and calls her plain. He comments on Ashara’s pale skin and her special purple eyes (which are coveted) in contrast. Often, Elia’s Dornishness is commented on with slight disdain in the narrative. It doesn’t help that she’s compared to Lyanna as well. There is certainly in-canon prejudice against the Dornish, enough to assume that part of the reason why she’s remembered this way is because of her heritage. She’s desexualised in comparison to these white Westerosi women (which is another reason why I don’t see how anyone can argue that the Martells are white).

Elia isn’t remembered for her intellect and personality as much as you think. There are always comments about her looks, even though she was so witty that she impressed Rhaegar Targaryen. No one (sans her brothers) make remarks about her intelligence; instead they treat Elia like someone to be pitied, like a victim who could never measure up to someone like Lyanna. Even her intelligence is downplayed in the narrative because of who she is, where she was from, and because she was sickly.

Women of colour don’t often get to be the every woman or the charming woman whose looks don’t matter or the set standard of beauty. Whether a woman of colour is beautiful, her beauty is almost always compared to whatever the standard is, and that’s light-skinned/white and European. No matter how beautiful, intelligent, and successful Kerry Washington is, she’s still not the standard of beauty. Racism and colourism are ideologies that created this standard.

One of two things usually happens in a society where the beauty standards are skewed. WOC are either exoticised, the way Arianne and Nymeria are in the narrative or they’re desexualised, the way Elia Martell is in the narrative. Whether we’re talking about real life or literature and media, the beauty of WOC is either treated as something lascivious and animalistic or completely downplayed—it’s never just that they’re beautiful women.

Think about how Latinas (fiery) and Asian women (submissive) are stereotyped and exoiticised. They’re treated like conquests that other men want to try out for a little while just so they can brag. Black women are typically desexualised on the other hand (unless they’re mixed race).

Have you ever heard the phrase, “pretty for a black girl”? Have you ever had someone ask you if you’re mixed because you can’t just be all black since they find you attractive and can’t believe your beauty comes from being black? And if you finally get tired of the prodding and explain your mixed heritage, they behave like they’ve hit the jackpot because you’re not just black? Have you read articles from black models in the industry who say that designers tell them they want black girls with white features (these features include straight anglo noses, not wide flat ones)? Have you seen the kind of Asian models who get the most attention? Have you thought about how colourism in certain countries affects how people see themselves? Some of the biggest market for skin lightening creams are India, China, and countries in West Africa. You rarely see a dark-skinned Indian woman on magazines in India and if they are featured, their skin is lightened in photoshop. Aishwarya Rai is beautiful and she’s a great actress, but there are actresses with equal beauty and talent who aren’t as famous because they’re not light-skinned and green-eyed like her. She’s a woman of colour who’s heralded because her beauty fits the highest standard.

That’s what I mean when I talk about how Elia’s Dornishness plays a part in how she’s perceived.

Pocahontas is complete fiction. I get it. It is a Disney fairy tale. Not an actual interpretation of what happened in real life. That was never what it was meant to be. Read the original interpretation of ANY Disney fairy tale. NONE of them follow the original story. Pocahontas is a Disney fairy tale like the rest. That is all.

It is a beautiful story with a beautiful message and it is told artfully. I don’t understand why people can’t just let it be that.

Look, Pocahontas is a great movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s not problematic. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. And it’s a little inappropriate to compare fairy tales to real history—-like, the relationship between European settlers and Native Americans was not a fairy tale, it’s history. So Disney can change it and make a great story or whatever—-“It is a beautiful story with a beautiful message and it is told artfully” Yes! True, but: “I don’t understand why people can’t just let it be that”. Because it’s not just that? It’s also many other things? Anyone with a questioning mind should be able to look into the things they loved in their childhood and see the flaws?

I agree with Cannon. And there is no pop up indication that reminds movie watchers that this is not the true story. This retelling is not a retelling in the way beauty and the beast is. Not only was that always a fictional tale, but the changes of Pocahontas as specifically rooted in a colonized way of viewing native cultures (see here and here2 for more details on specific problemtic cultural and historical problems).

I think it’s too blasse to go say “read a book and learn the truth” etc. If it’s a movie about a historical event, the truth should not be so hidden so as to be almost the complete opposite of the movie portrayal. People cannot be expected- and should not be expected- to google the historical context of every movie they see. Would it be nice if they did? Probably. Would it be great if schools spent more time examining the non-white, POC history of American experiences, before and after the American Revolution? Certainly.

But in examining how movies like this operate in real life, as opposed to idealized US Americana, Disney’s Pocahontas IS the dominant understanding of how that moment in history went down. That IS what happens when you tell a story about a culture that is often ignored except to be denigrated or used as visual props- you end up being the accepted narrative, because all others have been systematically silenced. And, again, given how this movie feeds into historical white washing and native erasure and presumptions and stereotypes of native cultures, this is very troubling.

It’s not just a movie… it was never just a movie
