Casting Practices in Hollywood

bahstudios:

My first foray into infographics. I think this is an important, but sadly overlooked, subject. Feel free to spread around, but please don’t remove the source.

this really happened

People, (i.e. the idiots who keep bashing all of these great actors that are being cast in these movies), keep turning all of this into a freaking “race thing” when it is NOT.
Race is not a “real” or biological thing, so arguing about the physical descriptions of these book characters in relation to their supposed “race” is akin to arguing about unicorns and leprechauns, imo. “Racial definitions” and descriptions vary GREATLY from country to country, region to region, and even PERSON TO PERSON. (Because they are, for all intents and purposes, NOT REAL.) Everyone’s view on what the characters would/should look like is bound to vary greatly from person to person, so…UGH! As long as they pick more talented actors and actresses like Lenny Kravitz and Jennifer Lawrence, who freaking cares what color they are??? If you don’t like who they cast, then just STFU and stay at home from the cinema so you can hole up in your room to picture the characters looking the way you’d prefer them to.

i hate, with the fire of a thousand suns, when ppl use this sociology 101 bullshit definition of a social construct to derail real conversations about the perception of race in the media.

this quote being in regard to the idea of jesse williams being cast to play finnick odair (that many fans imagined to be white—-i imagined him to be middle eastern, tbh) in the next hunger games film. like i can’t tell if this comment is against of the fans who don’t want jesse because he’s black or against the fans who are against the other fans who don’t want jesse because he’s black.

either way, this “RACE ISN’T REAL” argument needs to DIAF. like i’m not allowed to be upset that actors of color aren’t given the same opportunities as white actors because “RACE ISN’T REAL.”

*sighs*

IT IS ALWAYS A RACE ISSUE. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS.

this has been a public service announcement.

culture matters

Sometimes I hear people say that racism/sexism/etc in culture isn’t important or worth criticizing. ”Oh it’s just a book,” they say. ”It’s just a crappy TV show.” ”It’s just a commercial.”

This argument always baffles me. It’s like if you put…

dumbthingswhitepplsay:

  1. All Asians look like John Cho.
  2. Asians know everything. Seriously, everything. And they can probably fly in secret and they just don’t tell us.
  3. If an Asian person tells you to do something, for the love of god, do it. NEVER cross them.
  4. Black people are all hard….

fuckyeahfeminists:

The LA Times has dug in and talked to 89% of Academy members and to no one’s surprise the Academy is old, white and male.

Here are the stats:

  • The Academy is 94% white
  • The Academy is 77% male.
  • The median age is 62.
  • Only 14% are under 50 years old.

Also we…

u kno what’s even worse? the fact that the screen actors guild reports on hollywood’s casting issues and there is still no change worth writing home about. and white directors and white actors have the nerve to sit around and act brand new.
